How many tables and chairs you need for 100 guests

For 100 seated guests, rent 100 chairs plus a few spares, then divide the guest count by the seats per table. With our 60-inch rounds, listed at 6 to 8 seats, that is 13 tables at 8 per table or 17 at 6; with our 72-inch rounds, listed at 8 to 10, it is 10 to 13 tables.

The math

Tables: divide the number of seated guests by the seats per table, and round up. Chairs: one per guest, plus spares, plus a second set if the ceremony and the reception are in different places and nobody will move chairs between them.

We list our 60-inch rounds at 6–8 guests and our 72-inch rounds at 8–10. The low end of each range gives every guest more elbow room; the high end fits more people at fewer tables.

Why our seat counts run lower than most charts

Industry charts usually list a 60-inch round at 8 to 10 (typical) and a 72-inch round at 10 to 12 (typical). Those counts assume guests sitting close with a light table setting. With full place settings, a centerpiece and chairs with some width, the lower numbers are the ones guests will be comfortable with. If you are renting our tables, plan with our counts. Tables beyond guest seating

Guest tables are only part of the count. Most receptions also need some of these:

A head table for the wedding party, often built from 8-foot rectangular tables, or a sweetheart table for the couple alone.
A cake table and a gift or card table. Our 30- and 36-inch bistro tables come at table height for exactly this.
Buffet and bar lines. Banquet tables include serpentine sections for a curved line.
A place-card table, a guest book table, and a spot for the DJ or band if they need one.

Chairs: how many spares

Rental guides commonly suggest 5 to 10 extra chairs per 100 guests (typical). They cover late RSVPs, a guest who needs to sit near the door, and vendors who eat during the reception. Count your planner, photographer and band in the chair total if they will sit down to a meal.

If the ceremony is in one spot and the reception in another, decide early whether chairs will be moved between them or whether you need two sets.
